Homer : the vanishing village

Homer is a village that has played a large part in the history of the Niagara area. The village was settled in the late 1700s by United Empire Loyalists. It was a busy place by the 1800s, with 3 hotels, two livery stables, a racetrack, three churches, a burial ground, a store, school, post office and was a main stagecoach stop. The beginning of the end came in the early 1900s when the fourth canal was opened severing the village in two. The building of the Queen Elizabeth Highway, the Skyway and expropriation caused the disappearance of many homes and buildings. No wonder that this is “the vanishing village”. Many photos, a few maps and personal memories from former Homer citizens are recorded as they recall these events.
