Detectorists Series 2

The eccentric members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club return in this critically acclaimed dramedy about two misfits searching for Saxon treasure in the English countryside. Andy (Mackenzie Crook, Pirates of the Caribbean) has completed his archaeology degree at last, but he worries about providing for his wife, Becky (Rachael Stirling, The Bletchley Circle), and newborn son--while also trying to live up to the expectations of his imperious mother-in-law (Diana Rigg, Game of Thrones). Lance (Toby Jones, The Hunger Games), meanwhile, is still looking for love, and then someone unexpected walks into his life. The world of metal detecting proves just as tumultuous as their personal lives when a young German man enlists the DMDC to uncover a mysterious World War II plane wreck.

This quirky, award-winning British miniseries is about two friends whose hobby is metal detecting. If that sounds absolutely mind-numbing as a concept for your average situation comedy, let's say that it's all in the execution. Treasure hunters Andy (director Crook, who also writes the series) and Lance (Toby Jones) scour northern Essex for long-buried Saxon treasure. When the two aren't searching the fields of fictional Danbury, they are plodding through un-demanding jobs and trying to maintain their relationships with their female friends-Andy's long-suffering girlfriend and Lance's manipulative but still loved ex-wife. Lance and Andy occasionally fall out, but their friendship sustains both of them as they lurch through life. Verdict While not laugh-out-loud funny, this charming modern-day series will elicit a lot of smiles as it entertains. The characters are believable in spite of (or because of) their many flaws. Recommended for public library collections for its offbeat humor.-Joan Greenberg, Warminster, PA © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
