In Depression-era Buffalo Creek, Kansas, Neva Shilling runs the family business and cares for the family while her husband is away for weeks at a time, making sales in neighboring communities. She is shocked to discover that her husband had a secret family that he visited during his travels, and that he and his other wife have died, leaving three children that Neva is expected to take in.
