Uhtred, a ninth-century English orphan, is adopted by a Dane and grows up as a Viking, but ends up fighting for King Alfred when the Norsemen launch their greatest attack on England. When his wife and child disappear in the chaos, Uhtred has to face the greatest Viking chieftain in a fight to the death.
