Balram Halwai is a self-made man who through a combination of wit and luck has successfully navigated and escaped the dangerous, seamy, and corrupt channels of the Indian underworld. Over the course of seven nights he tells the reader his life story from which we learn that decency can still be found in a corrupt world.
